The Westwood Public Library seeks courteous and enthusiastic candidates for the position of Substitute Library Assistant. We are seeking collegial, energetic team players who thrive in an inviting and engaging environment. This position will primarily provide library services in the Information Services Department at both the Main and Islington Branch Library. Hours may vary from week to week and shifts may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends.
Duties include but are not limited to the following: Ensures a positive library experience for all patrons by delivering service in a courteous, confidential, knowledgeable, and effective manner. Performs circulation duties, including registering and processing library cards. Frequently assists with automated returns and self-checkouts of materials; shelves returned items. Assists patrons at Circulation Desk and by phone with account questions and with reserving museums passes through an online reservation system. Maintains integrity of patron database. Assists with program registration, promotes programs and provides program information. Provides general information and direction as needed to our patrons and resolves patron service concerns with courtesy and tact. Also includes daily lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as books, equipment and supplies. Upholds Westwood Public Library tenets of equity, diversity and inclusion, intellectual freedom, literacy and patron privacy. This position may work at the Main or Branch Library filling in at various service desks including Circulation and Children’s.
Qualifications and Experience: Associate’s degree or equivalent experience in a similar setting preferred. PC proficiency, excellent customer service and organizational skills are essential. Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with general public, while establishing rapport with patrons of all ages. Previous library experience preferred.
Schedule: Hours may vary from week to week and shifts may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. A typical shift is 4 – 7 hours.
Salary and Benefits: This is a non-benefit position. Starting salary is $19.48 per hour. Sunday shifts pay an hourly rate of time and one-half.
